The merchant weekend
Verslunarmannahelgi

The merchants weekend or verslunarmannahelgi is the preceding weekend to the annual bank holiday on the first Monday of August.

Originally intended for only this specific profession, the weekend grew in such popularity as a time to get out of the city into the countryside that it became a national holiday. Many events, both large and small, occur all around the island - the most significant gathering being in the Westman Islands or Vestmannaeyjar. Many locals congregate there to revel in a diverse range of performances, featuring both nationally renowned and lesser-known artists. The festival is renowned in Iceland for the merriment, the singing and the muddy tents.

For those considering a visit to the capital city, this weekend means many locals venture out to the countryside, creating a more serene atmosphere in the daytime but night time turns into a big party as some city dwellers adamantly refuse to leave, particularly during this extensive party weekend. For those staying in the city during the merchants weekend, you can still enjoy some of the merriment going on around the island through the "Innipúkinn" festival.

This music festival, now in its 21st year and aptly translated as "inside demon" is designed for those who would rather stay in Reykjavik and enjoy the comforts of home, rather than braving the potential rain while camping. The festival takes place over three days in the heart of Reykjavík during the merchant's weekend.

The main concert program, featuring a diverse range of performances, will take place indoors at Gamla Bíó and Röntgen on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evenings (August 4-6). Meanwhile, the outdoor area will be transformed into a vibrant festival atmosphere throughout the entire weekend. You can look forward to engaging activities such as Innipúkin's art and clothing market, talented DJs, and delicious catering services. Click here to book your festival tickets.
