Swimming for everyone

Posted on Categories IcelandTags

Going to the swimming pool is one of Icelanders‘ favorite pastimes. People do not go to the swimming pool just to swim but also to relax and meet other people. Most pools have hot tubs and a steam bath and often a water slide or two for the children. There are more than a 100 swimming pools in Iceland, most of them are outside and open all year long.

There‘s nothing better than sitting in a hot tub in the middle of winter, chatting to a good friend, snowflakes melting in your hair.

Find the nearest swimming pool and take a dip. You won‘t regret it.

Opera in the heart of Reykjavík

Fancy to add a little bit of music and culture to your stay in Iceland? If so, how does the wonderful opera Eugene Onegin by Pjotr Tchaikovsky at the Icelandic Opera sound? This wonderful opera is Tchaikovsky’s most loved opera. It is based on Alexander Pushkin’s verse novel and is extremely romantic and beautiful. Really something you shouldn’t miss out on.

The opera will be performed at Harpa concert hall on October 22nd and 29th 2016.

We are working closely with the Icelandic Opera and so we are able to offer tickets to Eugene Onegin in premium class seats along with a three course chef’s choice lunch or dinner at Ísafold Restaurant and after show drinks at SKÝ Restaurant & Bar.

Give Peace a Chance

Last night Yoko Ono, artist and widow of John Lennon, lit the Imagine Peace Tower in Viðey island, a small island off the coast of Reykjavík.

The Peace Tower is a great column of light projected from a white stone monument that has the words Imagine Peace written on it in 24 languages. Every year since 2007 the tower has been lit on Lennon‘s birthday, October 9 and lights up the night sky until the day of his death, December 8.

It is possible to sail to the island and get a closer look at the memorial every night at 20:00.

Reykjavik International Film Festival

Posted on Categories IcelandTags

What do Icelanders like to do on dark and windy autumn nights? They flock to the cinema. If you also like going to the cinema you are in luck because the Reykjavík International Film Festival (RIFF) started last weekend. At the festival you can see feature films, documentaries and short films from all over the world as well as a few from Iceland. RIFF also hosts all kinds of interesting events such as hot tub concerts, masterclasses and Q and A sessions with film directors. The main prize of the festival is a golden puffin. You don‘t have to worry about understanding strange languages because all the films are either in English or have English subtitles.

Mother nature has been welcoming these first days of autumn in Iceland by displaying the most amazing set of Northern Light activities over the capital.

To embrace the stunning lights Reykjavík turned off the street lamps to improve the visibility for watching the spectacular show and we enjoyed every minute of it.

We hope this is just a wonderful beginning of the Northern Lights show in Iceland for the winter!
