Music is still a vital part of the Icelandic art scene

In times of financial strains we sometimes see cut backs and postponements of various cultural projects around the world. In light of this it is nice to see that the Icelandic Music scene is still buzzing with activity and bands and artists like Ólafur Arnalds, Kimono, Sunna Gunnlaugs, Steed Lord, Hjaltalín and many more are very active in terms of record releases and gigs all over the world.

Don’t miss the Tiger Lillies at the Opera

The famous founders of the Brechtian Punk Cabaret style of music will be in Reykjavik performing for the Reykjavik Art Festival in May. Their concert at the opera house is just one of many, many happenings in Reykjavik during the festival days. The list of artists that will perform includes famous names such as the Gypsy Kings, John Cage, Luciano Pavarotti, our very own Björk and many, many more.

The festival will be held 15th to 31st of May.

Reykjavik Blues Festival April 4th – 9th

Are you coming to Reykjavik in early april? If so may we suggest that you check out the annual Reykjavík Blues Festival.

The festival offers a colorful program of blues, performed by Icelandic as well as international artists. The Reykjavík Blues Festival hosts international guests directly from the heartlands of the blues, Mississippi and Chicago and has always laid emphasis on giving young and upcoming artists an opportunity to perform.

The traditional special event, a concert with psalms, spirituals and gospel, is normally held in the beautiful Fríkirkjan church on Good Friday.

Icelandair makes Iceland even more accessible for the US market…

…and of course vice versa!

Icelandair today announced that they will start flying 4 times a week between Keflavik and Seattle on the American west coast. This new service will commence on July 22nd 2009. Not only will this open up a new market for Iceland as a destination, it will also make the trip from the US to other Scandinavian countries 4 hours shorter than via any other European hub.

Icelandair will also team up with Alaska Airlines in order to offer smooth transfers along the American west coast including destinations like San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Anchorage and San Jose.

Imagine Peace Tower

Tomorrow is the second last day to catch a glimpse of the Imagine Peace Tower being alight. By then it has been lit for the week of spring Equinox. The equinox is when the day and night are equally long and from that time onwards the days gets longer and longer until the midnight sun.

The tower itself is a work of art by Yoko Ono dedicated to the memory of John Lennon.

It’s time for the Reykjavik Winter Light Festival for the 8th consecutive year. The festival celebrates the return of the light as well as the winter by offering its attendees theatre plays, street performances, dance, visual arts and much more. Best of all might be, in these times, that all events are free of charge. The festival takes place on the 13th and 14th of February.

We hope to see a lot of new as well as returning guests at our hotels this weekend.

Mid-Atlantic

For those of you who work in the hospitality trade with the Icelandic market knows that there are, besides the big trade shows, two workshops/trade shows that has much more focus on Iceland at the West Nordic market. Vestnorden that takes place in September each year, and Mid-Atlantic in early February.

After FITUR in Madrid it was nice to attend an event more focus on the primary target groups that work with the Icelandic market. Not to say we didn’t have good meetings in Madrid, but here pretty much every person you speak to has some connection to incoming business.

Many good leads came from this years workshop and everyone seemed very upbeat and positive with regards to this years business.

Second day at FITUR

The, arguably, third most important trade show in Europe – FITUR 2009 – is on its way. As I’m writing this we have just arrived to the stand for the second day. The first day was good and productive. Although many travel-, and hotel companies decided late to give the FITUR a miss the turn out is still very good. The main topic of discussion is the financial climate of the world and the near future for the hospitality industry. In spite of the grim “doom and gloom”-reports in the media there are a very upbeat atmosphere in general. Tourism and travel is after all one of few industries that quite often can show growth even in harder times. Iceland, as a country and travel destination seems to be of great interest to the Spaniards. Representing and promoting Iceland are Reykjavik Excursions, Terra Nova, VisitIceland.com (The Icelandic Tourist Board, Island Tours of Spain and, as the only hotel operator from Iceland – CenterHotels.

Centerhotel Plaza is growing

This time last year we were busy incorporating the Hotel Plaza into our portfolio of hotels as our latest addition. Plaza remains very much in focus this year due to the current project of adding 77 rooms to the current 104 rooms.

Yes, that’s right CenterHotels continues to grow and add even more rooms to the trendy and vibrant 101 district in down town Reykjavik. In addition to the new rooms we are building a completely new bistro in order to be able to cater for all the new guests that will be able to stay with Hotel Plaza.

The blog will keep you updated on this exciting project, parallel to the work going on.
